AMD officially unveils Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT graphics card

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards from AMD have been announced, showcasing features that may prove to be a welcome rival to Nvidia’s 40 Series GPUs. These are the first two Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards from AMD, built on the RDNA 3 microarchitecture and TSMC 5nm chiplets. Even though AMD CEO Lisu Su had hinted at the Radeon RX 7000 announcements earlier this year, the now-confirmed RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT specifications and release information probably still caught some off guard.

Ray tracing, a prominent issue right now, plays a big role in the new RX 7000 GPUs. AMD received harsh criticism for not supporting ray tracing on its RX 6000 series graphics cards, but it took the criticism to heart. The RX 7000 GPUs have a brand-new ray tracing accelerator compute unit, as was previously known. The standard performance of ray tracing on the GPU should be improved by 50% using this accelerator. AMD’s recently disclosed specifications for its RX 7000 launch cards help shed light on what that entails.

Within its Graphics Computer Die, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX has 96 compute units. That should produce the 2.3GHz game clock speed that AMD claims. A strong 24GB of RAM that operates at 20Gbps over a 384-bit memory bus is linked with the GPU. With 84 compute units, 20GB of memory over a 320-bit bus, and a 2GHz game clock speed, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT is a step down. Inputs for DisplayPort 2.1 are supported by both GPUs.

AMD released several of its own measures for in-game framerates to frame the performance of their GPUs. According to claims, the RX 7900 XTX offers up to 295 frames per second in Apex Legends and 355 frames per second in Overwatch 2 at 4K resolution. With Ultra ray tracing settings and 4K resolution, Cyberpunk 2077 offers up to 62 frames per second. AMD contrasts that with the RX 6950 XT’s 42 frames per second ray tracing performance in Cyberpunk 2077. With Dying Light 2, a similar ray tracing comparison is done, with the RX 7900 XTX managing 32 fps in comparison to the RX 6950 XT’s 39 fps.

Even though AMD didn’t directly compare the RX 7000 GPUs to Nvidia’s 4000 series cards, it did criticize its rival. It made fun of the two 8-in power connections seen on RX 7000 cards and alluded to Nvidia’s problems with the RTX 4090’s 12-pin connectors melting. Support for DisplayPort 2.1, another feature missing from Nvidia’s GPUs, was also strongly discussed.
